Certainly one of the natural wonders of the world

New Year’s eve in the Philippines is a big deal. The usual ingredients normally include fireworks set off in the hours leading up to midnight (the better to scare away the bad spirits) and a big dinner. This year we certainly had the big dinner (thanks to the local churrascaria) but no fireworks. We had something even better. We visited the Falls of Iguacu.
The falls are located between Brazil and Argentina. As such you have a choice of exploring one or both sides. Fortunately a visit to the Brazilian side more than suffices as the falls has to be one of the most stunning places to visit in the world.

They are a tremendously impressive sight. It actually consists of 275 falls stretched along 2.7 kilometers of the Iguacu river. The largest of them is the Garganta de Diablo or Devil’s Throat. It is an impressive 82 meter high, 150 meter wide curtain of water falling off a height of 700 meters. The visit starts with a long constructed walkway along the canyon which gradually reveals the length and breadth of the falls. It ends with a constructed path right on the surface of the river, bringing you in very close proximity to the falls. With temperatures reaching over 30 degrees we happily welcomed the dousing we got with the spray of the waters and at such proximity we were enveloped by the cool mist that is generated by the falls. It is a multi-sensory experience eyes are dazzled by the spray of colors and the ears filled by the roaring of the waters. If one day you have the opportunity to travel to this part of the world, the Falls should be not be missed.

To give you an idea of the length of the Iguacu river..
